"Demand for Dewar's premium whiskies has grown significantly, especially in Asia and other emerging markets where the brands were launched only in the past three years," said Andreas Gembler, president and chief executive of Bacardi Limited. "To support our growth, we will invest more than $250 million in additional capacity to meet these needs, creating an entirely new infrastructure to support higher inventories of maturing whisky and increasing our blending, bottling and packing capabilities."
The expansion, one of the most significant investments ever in the Scotch industry, begins now and will continue over the next ten years.
"Bacardi has a rich history of investing in our brands and their heritage -- the backbone of our fine spirits. This substantial plan demonstrates our clear commitment to Scotland, known around the world for its quality whisky, and to our Dewar's brands, favorites among consumers," added Mr. Gembler.
Bacardi will build new product supply facilities in Scotland. The plan includes comprehensive redevelopment of an existing site in Parkhead, Glasgow, where Bacardi will construct new maturation warehouses and a new blend center, as well as install new bottling lines and packing equipment.
In addition, Bacardi is close to finalizing options to purchase a 100 acre tract of land in central Scotland to be developed as a second maturation and blending facility to support the growth of the brands.
Along with the expansion in production will be an increase in jobs and other benefits to the local economy -- including sourcing, packaging and purchasing materials from local suppliers.
Bacardi acquired the Dewar's brand in 1998. Since then the portfolio has expanded to include -- Dewar's 12 year old, Dewar's 15 year old, Dewar's 18 year old, Dewar's Signature and Aberfeldy single malt. In addition, Bacardi created the Dewar's World of Whisky Visitor Center in 2000, one of the premier Scotch visitor sites.
Bacardi, through its John Dewar & Sons Ltd. subsidiary, employs 300 people at seven locations throughout Scotland. The company currently operates whisky distilleries in Aberfeldy, Macduff, Aultmore, Craigellachie and Royal Brackla with blending, bottling and packaging facilities in Glasgow and Coatbridge.
