    New Crown Royal Drink Recipes

    With horse racing season upon us, the makers of Crown Royal are introducing two new drinks. If you're headed to the races or entertaining at home, try Crown Royal's new race-inspired drinks, the Crown of Roses and the Royal Stretch, to celebrate the spirit of the sport.

    For the 11th consecutive year, Crown Royal is sponsoring the Crown Royal American Turf Stakes on Friday, May 6, before the 131st running of the Kentucky Oaks.     The Crown of Roses' deep color is inspired by the garland of roses presented in victory circle to the winner of the Kentucky Derby. The winning combination of Crown Royal, amaretto, pineapple and cranberry juices allows the Crown of Roses to marry notes of cinnamon with refreshing fruit sweetness, which is rounded out by the classic taste of Crown Royal whisky.

    The Crown of Roses

  • 1 oz. Crown Royal
  • oz. amaretto
  • 1 oz. pineapple juice
  • oz. cranberry juice
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Garnish with a maraschino cherry

    Fill a cocktail shaker two-thirds full of ice and add all of the ingredients. Shake for approximately 15 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and add garnish.

  • The Royal Stretch is a refreshing drink alternative for race day. The blend of Crown Royal paired with brisk sparkling water and a hint of cherry juice is easy to make and satisfying.

  • 1 oz. Crown Royal
  • 3 oz. sparkling water or club soda
  • Splash of cherry juice or grenadine

    Serve over ice in tall glass with mint leaf garnish.

    What is Absinthe?

    Absinthe (aka as Absinth in the Czech spelling of the word) is an alcoholic liqueur made from a blend of herbs. The most popular herbs used for production are anise, licorice, hyssop, fennel and most importantly, wormwood (artemesia absinthium). It is the wormwood in absinthe that is most often blamed for absinthe's "special effects" and for its ban in the early 20th century.

    First introduced to the world in its modern incarnation in the early 18th century, it would quickly become the popular drink of choice. Throughout the 19th century, Absinthe would gain in popularity throughout Europe and parts of North America. By the 1850's, the bohemian culture of France would have embraced Absinthe completely and Absinthe would forever be associated with the famous artists of that time.

    Absinthe's downfall began in the mid 1850's as its popularity continued to grow. Because of its mysterious effects, hysteria was easy to create and its opponents took full advantage of this. It was the unholy (and wholly familiar trinity) of big business, the religious right and the left-wing press that pushed for the ban of Absinthe.

    Big business in this case were the wine makers. With the price of wine having risen due to successive crop failures, the price of Absinthe had dropped. This caused Absinthe to quickly become the drink of choice for the masses - a dangerous situation for the wine makers if it continued.

    The religious right took up the moral crusade against the increasing levels of alcoholism and the bohemian who drunk it. They linked the libertine reputation of Absinthe drinkers with the destruction of morals and began to highlight every case of "absinthe crime".

    The liberal left media, not to be left out, decried the destruction of "dignity" of the common man. They took up the cry of the wineries and the church, branding Absinthe as a dangerous, corrupting drink. Drawing from works published by the Prohibitionists and factors within the medical profession, stories and "studies" were conducted on the use of Absinthe or "Absinthism".

    Through these studies, mounting evidence was used to show that the use of absinthe instigated insanity. One of the most famous tests used to show this was the injection of large amounts of oil of wormwood into mice. The amounts used were up to 50 times the maximum concentration found in commercial Absinthe of that time. The resulting death of the mice was used as further proof that Absinthe was dangerous.

    The final straw came when the "Absinthe deaths" occurred in Switzerland in 1905. A Swiss farmer named Jean Lanfray shot his whole family. The newspapers were quick to point out that Lanfray had been drinking Absinthe, disregarding the fact that Lanfray had been drinking other spirits and wines during the course of that bloody day.

    The bans began in Belgium in 1905, followed by Switzerland in 1908. In 1915, France followed by banning any wormwood containing products. To this day, the ban on production and sale of Absinthe holds in the US. However, due to the convoluted laws of the US, only the sale of Absinthe was banned - it was still legal to own or purchase the product.

    These days, the production of Absinthe has increased once more. The Czech Republic, never having banned it is a major producer of the liquor. Spain is another well known country. Whether Absinthe will ever regain it's popularity waits to be seen, but it has certainly caught the popular imagination in movies like Moulin Rouge, Van Helsing and Euro Trip.

    Ok, another month and still more work being done behind the scenes. As an attempt to please you, our loyal supporters, I am working on getting the entire games database online with the current site. As Jason still has work to do I have a bit of time to try and make this update. All going well you'll see it in the next couple of weeks.

    The rest of the new site is progressing well. We've been trying a few Content Management programs. After 3 or 4 attempts, the current one may be working out. We've also installed our own ad server so we'll try and give you some better related ads, rather than some of the ones you've been seeing. Interested in advertising with us?
