Vacchs, is the main
character's(Burke)loyal friend, brother and partner.  He is assumed to be of Tibetan ancestry, he is both deaf and mute, as well as a force to be reckoned with.  Throughout the novels, you never come upon a situation where Max is drinking anything but tea.  Burke on the other hand, due to a problem
he had in Biafra, drinks only gingerale, but has been known to go to a bar and order a vodka tonic, vodka on the side.  He drinks the tonic water, then when the bartender isn't looking, pours the shot into the empty tonic; orders
another.
